Many (if not most or even all) European countries pay restaurant employees a living wage. Tipping isn't expected or needed.

In the US, "living wage" is a fairly new concept.

It would never occur to me to go out drinking, when I could stay home where I want to be! Besides, my kid will be here, and she's too young to buy drinks.
